How to Calculate GST Online (Formulas & Real Examples)
The Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a unified destination-based consumption tax applicable on the manufacture, sale, and consumption of goods and services. Depending on how your invoice or retail pricing is structured, you need to calculate either GST Exclusive (adding tax to a net base price) or GST Inclusive (extracting the tax and pre-tax base value from a gross total).
GST Calculation Mathematical Formulas
1. GST Exclusive (Add GST to Base Price)
Used when you know the pre-tax price and want to calculate tax and final gross amount.
Total Amount = Base Price + GST Amount
Example: ₹10,000 @ 18% GST = ₹1,800 tax → ₹11,800 total.
2. GST Inclusive (Reverse Tax from MRP / Gross)
Used when tax is already included in the final price (e.g. MRP on consumer goods).
GST Amount = Total Amount − Base Price
Example: ₹11,800 total @ 18% GST = ₹10,000 base + ₹1,800 tax.

Understanding CGST, SGST, IGST, and UTGST
The Indian GST architecture prevents cascading "tax on tax" by splitting revenues between the Union Government and States depending on the point of consumption:
CGST (Central Tax)
Collected by the Central Government on intra-state supplies. Paired equally with SGST.
SGST (State Tax)
Collected by the State Government where the goods or services are consumed in intra-state sales.
IGST (Integrated Tax)
Collected by the Central Government on inter-state sales and imports, then apportioned to the destination state.
UTGST (Union Territory Tax)
Replaces SGST in Union Territories without a legislature (e.g. Chandigarh, Andaman & Nicobar, Ladakh).
