How to Calculate GST Online (Formulas & Real Examples)

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a unified destination-based consumption tax applicable on the manufacture, sale, and consumption of goods and services. Depending on how your invoice or retail pricing is structured, you need to calculate either GST Exclusive (adding tax to a net base price) or GST Inclusive (extracting the tax and pre-tax base value from a gross total).

GST Calculation Mathematical Formulas

1. GST Exclusive (Add GST to Base Price)

Used when you know the pre-tax price and want to calculate tax and final gross amount.

GST Amount = (Base Price × GST Rate) ÷ 100
Total Amount = Base Price + GST Amount

Example: ₹10,000 @ 18% GST = ₹1,800 tax → ₹11,800 total.

2. GST Inclusive (Reverse Tax from MRP / Gross)

Used when tax is already included in the final price (e.g. MRP on consumer goods).

Base Price = (Total Amount × 100) ÷ (100 + GST Rate)
GST Amount = Total Amount − Base Price

Example: ₹11,800 total @ 18% GST = ₹10,000 base + ₹1,800 tax.

Understanding CGST, SGST, IGST, and UTGST

The Indian GST architecture prevents cascading "tax on tax" by splitting revenues between the Union Government and States depending on the point of consumption:

CGST (Central Tax)

Collected by the Central Government on intra-state supplies. Paired equally with SGST.

SGST (State Tax)

Collected by the State Government where the goods or services are consumed in intra-state sales.

IGST (Integrated Tax)

Collected by the Central Government on inter-state sales and imports, then apportioned to the destination state.

UTGST (Union Territory Tax)

Replaces SGST in Union Territories without a legislature (e.g. Chandigarh, Andaman & Nicobar, Ladakh).

Frequently Asked Questions

GST Exclusive means the entered amount is the pure base price before any taxation, and GST is calculated and added on top to produce the final invoice total. GST Inclusive means the entered figure already contains tax (such as standard retail MRP prices). In inclusive mode, the tool calculates the reverse tax to derive the pre-tax base cost and exact tax component.
When both the supplier and recipient are registered within the same state (Intra-State transaction), GST is split equally into CGST (50%) and SGST (50%). For example, an 18% slab creates 9% CGST and 9% SGST. When goods or services cross state boundaries (Inter-State transaction) or are imported, the full 18% is billed as IGST (Integrated GST).
Input Tax Credit (ITC) allows businesses to claim credit for GST paid on business purchases (inputs) against the GST collected on sales (outputs). If you paid ₹1,800 GST on raw materials and collected ₹2,500 GST on the final product sale, your net GST liability payable to the government is only ₹700 (₹2,500 − ₹1,800).
